The Creators

Literary Companion is an educational solution whose success is a direct reflection of the methodical approach of the people behind its development. Back in 2004, four individuals—representing complementary expertise in academic content, software development, Web development, and graphic design—came together to form AcademicMerit, LLC, and begin creating a Web-based product that would enhance the learning and teaching of classic literature.

Through a process deliberately grounded in first-hand knowledge of the needs of students, teachers, and administrators, this team has now exceeded its original vision—delivering a Web-based educational solution that seamlessly links learning, instruction and assessment.

Here is some biographical information on each of the four creators of Literary Companion:

H. Ogden Morse III (Chief Executive) has been creating award-winning educational software for the past decade. A graduate of Dartmouth College (B.A., English) and a practicing English teacher at Falmouth (Maine) High School, Ogden is also the former President/CEO of Lyceum Communications, where he was responsible for the development of Get A Clue®, the Web-based vocabulary-development program named one of the top four educational-software products in the U.S. in 2000. In addition to his executive responsibilities at AcademicMerit, he is co-developer of Literary Companion's academic content.

H. Ogden Morse, Jr. (Academic Director) has dedicated the entirety of his career to teaching and the pursuit of excellence in the English classroom. A graduate of Dartmouth College (B.A., English) and Yale University (M.A.T.), Ogden spent 38 years as an English teacher and department chair at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, CT. Over the course of that time, he became a recognized expert in critical and creative thinking – finally deciding in 1994 to leave full-time teaching to consult with major educational companies (ETS, The College Board) and schools around the country about the implementation of effective critical-thinking strategies. That same year, he joined Lyceum Communications as Chief Academic Officer, where he anchored the development of content for the award-winning Get A Clue®. At AcademicMerit, he is co-developer of Literary Companion's academic content.

Timothy P. Brooks (Director, Information & Technology) has built a career helping a wide variety of organizations formulate their Web strategy and design. A graduate of Colgate University (B.A., Political Science) and the University of North Carolina School of Law (J.D.), Tim practiced law for six years before shifting careers and moving into the emerging field of Web-based services in 1995. As co-founder of New England Internet Services and, later, as a senior executive in Web Strategy and Product Development for two leading Portland-based companies, he became recognized as an expert at showing organizations of all kinds how to use the Internet to not only articulate their vision, but also carry it out. Shortly after forming his own company, Integra Strategic Technologies, in 2001, Tim began exploring ways to apply his expertise to the goal of improving the use of technology in education. With responsibility for all of Literary Companion’s programming and information architecture, he is now bringing the benefits of his expertise to students and teachers.
